Call me crazy, but pairing navy and black is definitely a fashion do – – that is, if it is done right.
You’ve probably all been told the basic rules of thumb when it comes to fashion:
- Never mix brown and black
- Also, never mix navy and black
But what I always thought, was black goes with nearly everything and still to this day, I stand firm in that, here’s why…
Black, everyone owns a piece of black clothing. It’s easy, versatile, and matches literally almost anything (with a few limitations) including navy. Navy comes in all different hues, just as any other color, and that is an important factor to consider when I speak on behalf of wearing navy and black together, but, it can be done.
The outfit I’m wearing here works for the sole fact that this is a brighter hue of navy. Some shades of navy are so dark they almost look black. If you’re looking at a piece and you can’t tell whether or not it’s black or navy, that’s when you know it’s too dark and cannot be worn with black. Try this simple test for instance. If you’re questioning whether or not your top is too close to you black bottoms, put them up against each other and squint so that your eyes blur just a tinch. If you can still see that the colors are separated by a defined line, then you’re good to go. However, if when doing this they become a blackish blur, chances are the pieces are too close in contrast and would end up clashing just a tid-bit.
Another key tip for mixing the no-no colors is playing around with fabrics and material. Here, I’ve parked my navy top with black leather pants which made the outfit seem less flat and more edgy. I love this look because it’s mixing two dark neutral pieces and is tied together with some of my favorite go-to gold accessories.
My wardrobe is full of dark shades (I can’t help it, they’re too easy to mix n’ match!) and feeling the urge to start playing around with color schemes, I came up with this navy and blue combo and have been loving it ever since.
Curious as to whether or not you’ve mastered the concept of color combos without the clash? Feel free to send questions my way and I’d be thrilled to guide you in the right direction 🙂
